Federal Reserve Survey Shows Tighter Credit Standards Across Domestic Banks
Commercial banking institutions across the United States are restricting loan availability as uncertainty over macroeconomic conditions increases, according to the Federal Reserve's October Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey. The quarterly study, compiling feedback from 61 domestic banks and 18 American branches of international lenders, revealed that underwriting standards tightened during the third quarter for smaller enterprises and riskier household borrowers, even as credit metrics for major corporations held steady.
Financial institutions also heightened scrutiny over real estate transactions, reporting stricter standards and waning demand across commercial land development, nonfarm structures, and multifamily properties. Lenders attributed the defensive posture to less favorable economic projections and worsening industry-specific challenges, prompting wider risk premiums across companies of all sizes regardless of balance sheet scale.
