Berkshire Hathaway Expands Third-Quarter Repurchases Amid Profit Contraction
Berkshire Hathaway expanded its share buyback program during the third quarter, deploying $9.6 billion toward repurchasing its own stock. This figure represents more than double the volume recorded in the preceding quarter, lifting the conglomerate's year-to-date repurchases to approximately $14.4 billion under chief executive Greg Abel. The buyback acceleration took place against a backdrop of capital rotation shifting away from technology assets into traditional value sectors.
The repurchase activity occurred as operating income declined 5.8% to $12.705 billion, driven primarily by weaker results across insurance underwriting and investment yield. Total net earnings also fell 28% to $22.112 billion due to a steep reduction in recognized investment gains, even as underlying units in energy, manufacturing, and rail transport delivered earnings expansion over the period.
